The purpose of this blog is to tell the story of The Lord of the Rings as dictated by the outworking of the various Saga expansions of FFG’s LCG. Starting with ‘A Shadow of the Past‘ and concluding with ‘Mount Doom‘, I intend to unfold the epic tale of Tolkien for myself, taking my heroes along the journey where they may save Middle-Earth and usher in the Fourth Age, or see them stray and fall into ruin and despair. If you wish to experience the stories unfolded by the quests not based on the books, have a look at the tales contained within The Appendices to see if there is something more to your liking.
I shall be playing according to the Campaign Rules as set down by Fantasy Flight Games, including the rule of Fallen Heroes. To summarize the Campaign Rules for those of you who are unfamiliar:
- If a hero is in its controller’s discard pile at the end of a scenario, that hero’s name is added to the list of Fallen Heroes and its controller may choose a new hero when setting up the next game. The new hero is recorded in the Campaign Log and each player receives a permanent +1 starting threat penalty for the rest of the campaign.
- If a player wishes to trade a hero he controls for a hero with a different name, he may replace 1 hero he controls with a new hero when setting up the game. The new hero is recorded in the Campaign Log and each player receives a permanent +1 starting threat penalty for the rest of the campaign.
- Boons and burdens are two new card sub-types for use only when playing campaign mode. These cards are special player cards and encounter cards that represent the consequences of player choices, both good and bad.
- Boons or burdens earned are kept throughout the entire campaign. A boon or burden that has the “permanent” keyword is attached to a hero, and stays attached to that hero for the duration of the campaign. It cannot be discarded, and leaves play if the attached hero leaves play.
Play will be two-handed, and a game play-through will be posted alongside each narrative report. I am going to try and keep any changes to the narrative as thematic as possible (as much as one can in a card game), so while I may take Glorfindel as part of the Fellowship setting out from Rivendell, I would not include Eowyn. The former was actually at the Council of Elrond and would have just cause to then join the Fellowship, while no-one from Rohan was even invited.
One thing to be aware of is I do not own all the expansions, by a long stretch, so do not expect the most optimised decks that could possibly be put together. I will endeavor to keep my decks as thematic as I can, but with a more limited card pool there is only so much I can do. The Campaign Log page will detail which heroes I am using, and how many are fallen, how many victory points are earned in each scenario and which boons and burdens I have acquired.
